Last July, the American College of Sports Medicine and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency created Professionals Against Doping (PADS), to address banned substances in sports. The anti-doping partnership also specifically discourages steroid use, with a focus on ensuring that physicians, scientists, and other professionals who work with athletes do not encourage, support, or tolerate its use.
PADS recognizes the crucial role healthcare professionals and trainers play in either aiding or, hopefully, discouraging use of banned substances. PADS is a sports medicine community effort to take it one step further. ACSM and other organizations consider it an ethical violation if a member is found to aid or abet an athlete in doping to enhance performance.
Still, doping in sports continues to be an issue, despite monitoring and punishments. What policies do you think are needed in order to eliminate doping in sports? Give us your comments and feedback!
